How to Perform Self-Learning on the Hobbywing 9028 ESC

If your electric skateboard's motor suddenly stops spinning or exhibits abnormal behavior, it might be due to inaccurate motor parameters. This can occur after prolonged high-power use or high temperatures affecting the ESC settings. Fortunately, the Hobbywing 9028 ESC includes a self-learning function that can quickly recalibrate the motor.

Why Self-Learning May Be Needed

During intense riding or after extensive use, your ESC may lose accurate motor data, leading to problems like:

  • Motor not spinning
  • Stalling or sluggish response
  • Reduced performance

Running the self-learning process typically resolves these issues in just a few minutes.

Step-by-Step Guide: Hobbywing 9028 ESC Self-Learning

  1. Power off both the board and remote: Ensure both the ESC and remote are completely off before starting.
  2. Turn on the board: Press the power button on your skateboard.
  3. Turn on the remote: Power on your remote control.
  4. Activate self-learning mode: Quickly press the power button on the board five times in a row. Make sure your presses are rapid and firm.

Note:  If the self-learning mode does not start, it may be due to the button being pressed fewer than 5 times or the pressing speed being too slow. In this case, turn off both the board and remote, then repeat the process.

What Happens During Self-Learning?

The motors will spin forward and backward a few times. This calibration process takes about 5-10 seconds. When the motors stop spinning, the process is complete.

After Self-Learning

  1. Power off the board and remote.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then power them back on.

Your ESC should now be recalibrated for smoother, more consistent motor behavior.
